I know this question sounds stupid but I really need to know.

ok first you want to go to your laptops makers website and go to the support section ... it will tell you if there is an internal wireless card... if its there use it...if it isn't you have two choices... USB wireless adapters .... convenient but troublesome... pccard wireless adapters .... dependable in the extreme but less convenient ... look for cards that have a option for external antenna connections which does two things, you can leave the pccard in the laptop and only remove the small antenna (which sticks out about two inches and is extremely easy to damage), and you can buy modified antennas that can boost your wireless performance substantially...

either via a USB WiFi adapter (external) or a PCMCIA adapter (internal) - either way would allow you to access a Wireless network (WiFi)...
