Good answers so far.

My two cents: you don't want to BE an actress so much as you want to WORK as an actress. So, you have to go where the work is.

If you want tv and film -- go to Los Angeles.
If you want the 'legit stage' -- go to New York.

If you decide to attend a school (rather than take classes and workshops) then get to know the graduating class as best you can. Hopefully someone will have work by the time you graduate and can offer you some help.

Today? Go to your local tv station or PBS station and intern so you can learn how the mechanics of production works. When someone is making a local commercial -- offer to be talent. Be the week-end weathergirl. That's advice for if you want to do tv or film.

Actors act -- so always be working at your craft!

I say if you have the money try to go to a big company school to get noticed, the New York Film Academy has several locations and is a good school. I know Steven Spielbergs son attended there and a few other people so its pretty well known. I'm thinking of going in a couple of years.

The New York Film Academy isnt a college so you wouldnt really get a degree but most college students after they the attend NYFA they go to a university like Colombia and NYU and major in performing arts but you should really check there websites.

Well you don't NEED a degree to become an actress. If you do major in acting, it would be a BFA (Bachelors in Fine Arts).

Most college have theater and acting classes.

Pace U
U of Arts

Have some great acting programs.

Many schools have a theater department.... I would think most of them do these days since everyone wants to be an actor...

www.petersons.com has a pretty simple search engine to find colleges that offer programs that interest you, are geographically convenient, affordable, etc.

In the meantime, I suggest signing up for acting workshops and classes (many community theaters or community colleges offer them) and get some training and as much experience as you can.
