I believe there was a Jesus. The Bible, however, was written by PEOPLE. It is a documentation of ideas mixed with history. Certain things are metaphorical not, as the phrase goes, "God's honest truth." The biggest mistake someone can do in a religion is discount the power of a symbol. We get so mixed up in words that we forget how to think for ourselves. I feel more spiritual now than I ever did when I was affiliated with a Christian church, the members of which did nothing other than turn up their noses and act just as bad as everyone else. The difference, they did it all in the name of God. Don't get me wrong, I respect someone's beliefs, no matter what the religion. I also believe in a higher power, but I believe that he or she cries everytime they see us fight and bicker when not one of us really has a proper understanding of what's waiting. The definition of faith is lost. It's not hard-headedly claiming you know the truth and screaming it at everyone else so as to make them scared of everything around them, it's believing something for YOURSELF, something good and something positive.

I believe he existed, I agree with his philosophy, I do not believe that every word in the bible is true given that most of it is intended to be parable, not to mention that similar stories exist about Buddha in that religion's relative texts (the story of Buddha's birth and Christs are very similar and the story Buddha's birth was hundreds of years earlier.)

I don't criticize any ones religious beliefs in so much as they don't use those belief's to encroach on my own.

However, I don't understand literalism where the bible is concerned. The history of the written bible has many twists and turns with many changes made along the way beginning with the council of Nicea where books were selectively omitted, the translations from ancient Hebrew to Greek to Latin to English, the King James version differs from the roman catholic etc.

When one says they believe every word in the bible is the literal truth and decreed by God, I ask which bible? which version? which translation? or does God regularly re-edit the text through man?

No i don't hey.
Just a thought though; from what you've said the only reason a person would believe is bacause they're scared of hell.
Have a nice life.

As a man? yes.

As a prophet? yes.

As a philosopher? yes.

As the son of God? no.

Oh, and as far as "you no the rest," I'm not sure if that's 'netspeak or just sloppy proofreading. Either way, it makes you appear less intelligent.
