A router allows you to set up a network so that you can hook other computers to your laptop for file sharing, multiplayer games, etc. Also so that multiple computers can share one Internet connection.

If you have high speed internet (cable or DSL), you would attach the router to the modem that came from the internet company. You can then attach computers to the router and set up a small network and share the high speed internet between all of them.
