the most important thing to remember is that the birds and the bees... or sex education can not be given in one talk... it must remain an open and ongoing conversation between you and your son...

Be open and honest and matter of fact...

No age is too old - it just depends on how you go about it. Be frank and honest, but only elaborate as much as you need to. Use the medical terms for the body parts (it's important he knows these to ensure understanding if he's ever in trouble).

Don't turn your talk into a "manual" for lovemaking. Just deal with the facts -eg, the man inserts his penis in the woman's vagina, he ejactulates, the sperm fertilises an egg/ovum, which forms the foetus.

NEVER tell your kid one of the fibs that parents seem to like (cabbage patch, stork, etc) under ANY circumstances. If he's old enough to ask, he's old enough to know the truth.

8 is a fine age, if not a little too late. He has probably heard most of the main points from his friends already. You will do him a disservice if you don't talk to him about it soon.

I recommend reading him a book and then discussing it. The all-time classic is "Where Did I Come From?" It's a picture book that's very honest and straightforward, while still being fun for kids to read.

Use that as a starting point, and be ready to answer any questions that he has.

I dont' think 8 is too young. You only have a few years where you are the most important voice to your child. Tell him as much as you can about the good and the risks. Even if it is not understood rightnow you will have planted the seed and opened the lines of communication.

Whenever they have questions is the right age. Just don't give more information than he's asking for or ready to process. Answer the questions he has honestly and, if possible, without embarrassment, but don't feel like you have to get into graphic detail about all the possibilities.

no not at all my brother an i where told about sex at 7yrs old. my mum gave me the talk any my dad told my brother. we where sat down and told in detail about all the facts. we understood fine and our questions where answerd in full honesty. i think 7 to 9yrs old is the best time to learn about the subject your body is starting to go through changes and the mind is curious. in fact i was that curious i wanted to know more and more on the subject so my parents brought my brother and i a few adult mags and movies for us to watch and they sat down and explaind what was happening in them. is was a great experiance for my brother and myself and gave us all the information we needed good luck
