I understand the name is from our colonial past but its disappointing that anyone can take offence. I know many such folk who regard themselves as West Indian without any qualms. I guess the West Indies cricket team need to be renamed.

Right PC gone bonkers.
People from Caribbean, once called the "West Indies", were always know as West Indians. At least that's what my friends from Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, the Bahamas, have said.

If you want a job in the race relations industry, you need to keep up with the latest jargon. Sometimes the new buzz words change week by week and it can be pretty hectic for a sincere person to get a job in a "mixed" area if he or she doesn't hang out socially with the PC brigade who are doing "very nicely thank you" in their "equal opportunity " jobs and want more of their own mediocre careerists to succeed at interviews, rather than get hassled by genuine non- racists, whatever their colour. Its not madness. Its greed, when you get down to it. Often it's also an exceptionally hypocritical form of racism if you think about it........ But it's still best to use the terms that the people refered to generally find acceptable. Like "white" is better than "whitey"!
