My position was recently downsized and I have filed for unemployment. My question is, those of you who have been in this position before, did you find that you made more money existing off of unemployment, or working though temp agencies? Any good/bad experiences?

I'd spend the first few weeks going at it trying to get a job. If nothing comes, take some temp assignments.

But!

Call your Department of labor and let then know it won't be permanent work. They should make a note of it. Also, at least in my state, they will deduct two thirds of your pay from your unemployment check. For example, if your weekly check is 400 dollars, and you make $150, they will take $100 from your $400. So you would actually make more money that week. $300 plus $150 is $450. So if you get an assignment that is just part time like say just mornings, or just a few days a week - that can actually go good for you. You'll make extra money, you can still job hunt, and who knows, maybe they will want you full time at the temp assignment. Also, by you not claiming all your check - your unemployement benefits will last longer than the normal 6 months.

Don't try and work through a temp agency and not claim it and still collect unemployment. You might get buy once or twice, but they have people that check these things. You might have to pay back your benefits, get penalty weeks, be denied benefits, go to a hearing - you don't want that. Just be honest.

Also, if you accept an assignment that will last a few weeks, inform the department of labor that it is not permanent and you will need to collect again. Have your agency fax a lack of work verification to the Department of labor when the assignment ends. Otherwise it is like you have to start a new claim and it can take them a week or so to verify that your assignment ended.

Don't let your money be affected!

You can't get no more than $450 per week on unemployment. there are some temp agencies that pays well over 420 an hour. I would definitely take temporary employment over unemployment. But in the meantime draw your unemployment until you find a job.

go through temp agencies, if not for the money, then at least for the great work experience on your cv, for that next big job you want.
