Why can't you get a signal with your phone in a basement?

Whether you can get the signal or not is all depends on whether your provider install the relay antenna (sorry not sure the exact term for this) nearby. So it's not that all basements are out of bound. For example, you can get signal in the subway or underground shopping centre. That's because the provider installed the relay antenna there.

Probably because you have either Nextel or Sprint.
