Sure! I would buy a ticket to see a chimp on a bobsled. A chimp in a speedo would make the swimming competitions very entertaining.

Wow! just imagining chimps competing in Olympic games has given me something to ponder and giggle about all day. Thanks!

I don't know if there's an Official Olympics Rule about being human in order to participate. If there is, then the chimps (as well as sliverback gorillas and bonobos) are out of luck.

If they were allowed to participate, I think they (the chimps) would have an unfair advantage over humans. They are proportionately stronger, and can jump higher, etc. So to be fair, there would have to be a "Great Apes Olympics" so that they could compete against each other.

But if you can teach a chimp to throw a shot put, I say why not?

Yes.

The two things that would make it worth it:

A. Watching a human gymnast culminating a decade of hard training by executing the move of his life. Then watching a chimp do the same move much better with its eyes closed, and walk off laughing at the human while scratching its butt.

B. Those long, lingering side profile shots of the medallists on the podium as the Chimpanzee National Anthem is played.

It's probably that 0.1% that makes a difference in the brain function. Even though same apes are highly intelligent, I doubt that they would understand the rules and fairness which needs to be while participating in the Olympics...

But why not an Olympics for the chimps? Probably they don't have that ego for that.

I don't believe that the chimps would want to compete. They do not have the drive for athletic superiority and competition that humans have. The team events would be out of the question for them, and anything requiring what for chimps would be massive amounts of manual dexterity, such as shooting, they would be inferior. They have no concept of artistic beuty in dance and gymnastics, so their form would be bad even if you could train them into a routine. I don't imagine chimps like spinning in the air wearing ice skates, either.

Then again, I've been wrong before. Go team Fuzzball.

Chimps don't have 99.9% of the same sequence of DNA as humans. The DNA sequence of fruit flies are more similar to humans than chimps.

(by the way, fruit flies would totally win at gymnastics, they litterally fly)

That would be quite interesting, I think it takes a way the meaning of competing between other humans but none the less pretty entertaining. Oh by the way, we should include bananas since are we share 50% of their genetic sequence.

No, as closely related as humans and chimps are, they are still very different. .1% may not sound like much, but in genetics, it's massive.
