I was fired from my previous position due to performance issues. I don't think they were 100% my fault, but I accept that it was mostly my own fault. For six months I was unable to find a similar job. I had a few interviews, but despite reading all the articles I could about how to deal with the issue in interviews every place I interviewed turned me down because of it.

Now I've been able to find a job, but it's not in the same field as I was in before, and it's not leading to my career getting back to where I want it. I want to find a position with a company in my field, even if it's a few steps down the ladder from where i was, just to prove to them that my performance at the other place is not reflective of who I am. When I go back to contact companies I've previously interviewed with, what should I say? Or should I move on and try to focus on a new career path? I've been turned down by every local comapny in my field, and I'm not willing to relocate.

If you're considered "tainted goods" by local businesses in your field, you may have no alternative but to relocate if you want a second chance in the same field. Short of offering to start at the bottom, going back to companies where you've already interviewed and beggin gfor work generally is just going to annoy them.

Your best option right now is to simply try to stay in contact with these employers - ask about the job climate, ask about local events, seminars, conventions or local meetings of the trade you're in. Join professional associations to network among people in the field locally.

What you're trying to do is twofold:
1. You get the employers to recognize you as a regular in the field - someone who is serious enough about it to pursue it outside of a 9-5 workday.
2. You demonstrate to everyone in the field your level of dedication to the craft by making yourself visible among the professionals; employers will begin to notice you by association and you just might learn stuff as you do.

Good luck.

Here are a few tips for pre and post interview that will make you stand out. Prior to your interview research the company and know it's history, get the person who is interviewing you to talk about themselves ask them about there career, how they got there and there thoughts on the company and why you should be working there. After the interview make sure you get everyones business cards that you have met with and send them a thank you card. It shows that you are interested in the position. A simple "Thank You" will get you very far because hardly anyone does it, and make sure you hand write it and mail it that day, do not send an e-mail that's lazy and cheesy. There is nothing wrong with following up a few days after you have met with someone it shows your interested and eager. Always at the end of the interview you should be asking when they are planning on making a desicion so this way you know when to follow up. Don't worry if you have to settle for something out of you career path for now, keep interviewing and waiting for the position that you really want. Good Luck!

Don't worry I have been in your shoes more times then I can remember and after several jobs I have finally found my home.

you need to start fresh. you could go and pursue your current job. after several months you could go back to your desired career and never mention about your past in the same field. and redeem yourself.
