My guess is to further "advertise" themselves..
If they donate 3 million to some African nation.. some kid will hear about it. And when the kid finds out who actually did so-- and doesn't know who that person is.. she will want to study that person.
Later when that little girl is older, she will completely respect that particular celebrity and support the celebrity-- once again, another fan.
--It's just a business thing. And we all know that Hollywood is a buncha ****....and overpaid idiots....
Besides, it's a tax cut... And I believe if it's an international charity, the tax cut is further increased...
Just another money making technique used by rich people... to gain the most profit after taxes...

It's unfortunate, because a lot of these big-name celebrities who give money or put on benefits for third-world countries have good intentions. The problem is most goverments in third-world countries are very corrupt, so the money never gets to the people it is intended to help. Our Federal Government deals with the same issue when we send foreign aid. You're right -- we should concentrate more on helping people HERE in the good ol' U.S. of A. first. There's a much better chance that the money spent on helping people here will actually get to the people who need the help.

I think its because they think that their money will go farther in a country where people make less than a thousand a year rather than here where we have all sorts of programs.
I think that stars prefer to help kids here not adults because they feel they can make a difference at that end. Like stars will do stuff for kids with cancer. And A lot of stars do get involved personally. A bunch of the Phoenix Suns were helping local Phoenix inner city kids.

Better media coverage.. more impact.
A million dollars also goes a lot further in Africa than it does in the US.
There's really no excuse for poverty in the West, except that people don't care about their own next door neighbours, and also that government social policy isn't working.
Third world countries actually have an excuse for poverty, such as corrupt governments, wars, famine, natural disasters, history, and invasions from corporate companies and Western governmets that suck out all of their potential resources and wealth.

Anyone who can, should donate money to both third world countries as well as his own (and as well as other countries even though they are not 3rd world). But unfortunately it is common for "big names" to donate millions to the "Democrat Party" of the US and their likes. "Big names" donated money for a party marking the 50th anneversary of NATO in 1999 during the crimminal Jihad against Yugoslavia. It is publicity that counts.

ughhh, well, i think this is because there are MORE poor and starving people in third world country than in the U.S., a first world country. i mean, YEAH, there R people starving and dying in the U.S. too, but come on! that's only like 5% of the population, in third world countries (they're called third world countries for a reason) more than half the population is... dying.
and anyways, celebrities think they look better when they donate money to third world countries because it looks like they're helping so much more than donating money to 1st or 2nd world countries.

You need to research the facts. Yes, lots of money goes overseas, including mine (and I'm not a rich celebrity) because that's where it is needed most and where it does the most good.
Now, without bothering to dig out more facts for you, it occurs to me that Jerry Lewis and Danny Thomas supported charities that took care of Americans almost exclusively.

HI,, i agree with you ,, to a point,,, we have so many needy people here in America,,,, but......but,,,, last year,, after the hurricanes,,, Katrina and Rita,, we had quite a few that donated their time and effort for help......and I really really think that was a good thing.....
Also,,,, some do donate to things that we never hear of.... they like to remain anonymous as to how they donate.....
good luck
