Sternous work is often responsible. heavy work, especially lifting weights, puts great strain over the abdominal muscles. If there is underlying weakness already present, hernia develop. other causes are: chronic cough like whooping cough, chronic bronchitis, , dysuria due benign enlargement of the prostate, , chronic constipation, stricture urethra, and previous operation causing weak scars in abdominal muscles.,

Hernias occur in the long striated muscles of the body, like the abdomen. The muscle is weak and under stress can split and tear allowing the underlying tissues to protrude thru. This most commonly happens after a surgery for some other problem...the muscles have been cut, sewn back together and are weakened, so after time passes and the person isn't so careful about lifting, thinking them selves healed, will try to pick up something heavy, and the muscle splits or tears. Of course the abdomen isn't the only place a hernia can take place, but it is the most common.
