I found the easiest way was to halve 50 twice, but if it was a different fraction, like 1/6, I probably would have gone through "how many times does 6 go into 50" long division.

There are several ways to do this.
work it out like a proportion: X/50 =1/4
cross multiplying would give this result in 4x=50
then divide by 4 x=50/4=12.50
Or you could set it up like this

1/4 or $50 is $12.50. Divide 50 by 4... GEESCH... Generation "D" (for Dumb) get's dumber all the time.
