I mean, I get it....answer questions, get points. And I genuinely needed an answer when I started on here, but now I've got so caught up in getting points...I'm just randomly voting for the lot of you!

So I feel very silly asking but what do we do with them once we've got them?

Thanks!

Nothing at all! Go up levels gradually, and then people will respect your answers more when they see how high you are in levels. I just started like you, and now every time I check my inbox I can't wait to see if i have any 'Your answer has been chosen as the best!' emails. Now I have over a thousand points, but I think it's just for bragging powers. Get your friends onto it and try to get more best answers than them. But yeah just seeing one of those emails makes my day, so I guess this is good for our health!

To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table below summarizes the point values for different actions. While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.)

I've gotten the urge to rack up as many points as I can too! When I stopped to ask myself why all I could come up with... it's fun!

It's a good way to get advice when you might need some, and it's part of human nature to want to give advice! This is merely a fun pastime that can make you feel good when you help others or get good advice.

As for the points... well I'd have to agree they might be something to brag about...

this is what I answered for another question, and I think it fits quite nicely here too!

What is the point in points? Do we get anything other than more points? And with more points we get privileges, so what? With more privileges we just get to answer more questions and rate them, and therefore get more bl**dy points, WHICH ARE USELESS.

The funny thing is, that even though I cannot see any point to this, I actually quite enjoy it!!

absolutely nothing. their pointless, i mean unless your the kind of person who would enjoy bragging about them!

I like yahoo answers but i dont understand it when people answer and say things like- "i dont know! haha thanks for the points!" i think its really pathetic.

But i do like being picked as best answer- its a kind of proud feeling, knowing that you've helped someone.

Absolutely nothing. They're worthless, despite Yahoo's "special gift" coming soon claim. They're not worth a thing, but somehow it seems like they're enough to make people competitive. Human nature?
