Increase in white cells means LEUKOCYTOSIS.
Leukocytes means White Blood Cells.
An increase in the number of leukocytes (above 10,000/mm cube) in the blood, generally caused by presence of infection and usually transient. It also may accompany or occor after hemorrhage, extensive operations, coronary occlusion, malignant growth, pregnancy, certain intoxications, and toxemias.

whoa, be carefull. I dont know too much about white/red cell counts but i beleive 5,000 is normal in white cells. My sister had leukemia and her counts were 500,000. Yes I typed this right. So tell your inlaw to ask the doc whats up or what he suspects. My only guess would be cancer, but like i said im not too familliar on this subject.

It could be lots of things, from something pathological like leukemia to something more benkgn like an infection. They need to pin the doc down to be more specific and pursue looking for a cause.

it means they are anemic, or there is an infection causing the t-cell count to sky rocket (i.e. AIDS)
