don't worry, that's totally normal. and it is important to tell her. you don't need to have a huge conversation with her. it is a very private thing, but your mom can help you with buying things that you need, etc. just tell her in a simple way "mom i got my period" when she's alone in the kitchen or whatever. even if you don't have an open relationship she'll probably at least ask if you need any painkillers or tampons.

i know what you mean--i had my first period when i was 14. i was at my cousin's house swimming, i went to the bathroom and saw some blood...i had no idea what it was(well, at least i was trying to convince myself it wasn't my first period). however, it was still coming out all day, so i decided to tell my mom. i didn't have any money to buy pads, and i wasn't sure what i should do. so, i just told her. it was really uncomfortable at first, because we never talked about that kind of thing before.
however, maybe you could talk to your teacher at school, the nurse at school, a doctor, or a friend's mother if you are closer to them. but definitely let your mom know soon. it is good to keep parent's informed about these kind of things.
and yes, it is normal for your period to be heavy at first. usually it will start out heavy, and then get lighter towards the end. mine usually lasts 7 days, but it is also normal for a woman to only menustrate for 2 or 3 days. each woman is different.
i really reccomend going to this site:
www.moonhutnaturals.com
for more information about how women used to think of menustration. it may seem a bit off the wall at first, but keep reading, it is a really great site. i am 20 years old, and i have decided to use reusable cloth pads and learn all about being a woman.
there is nothing to be ashamed of. good luck to you and remember to never be afraid. :-)

My mom and I are like that. Try sitting her down and talking to her. If your not comfortable about doing that. Go to a female family member who you feel comfortable talking to. Nothing to be embarrassed about. you should still tell your mom though, if you even told a female family member, just so she knows. Write a note to her or just call her and tell her. It normal to have a heavy flow also.

i think u should go ahead and tell her because what r u going 2 do: sneak 2 the store and buy pads, tampons or whatever, without ur' momma knowing? thas slow just tell her because she should understand, because im sure she started hers 2, so tell her, and sit down and talk 2 her, dont tell her over the phone, just wait till she gets home, then sit down and tell her, k....... wish u the best...... and i didnt start off heavy on my first day so i dont know, i guess it depends on ur' body......

hey sweetie, i feel for you. my mom and i never talked about anything either, in fact my closet sister figured out i started because i was so upet, and she told my mom. my sister explained everything to me. my mom just ran her big fat mouth to all my relatives and embarresed me.....yeah, i guess you probably should just so she can buy you what you need every month. also it is normal to be heavy the first few days. i started my period when i was 9-1/2 years old. no joke. i was mature for that age. physically and mentally. well, goodluck with your new adventure, sucks doesn't it?.... i have 2 daughters 17 years old and 10 years old on this sunday..... i think she's gonna start soon because every month i get ready to start, she complains about cramps. i think she's gearing up for the big one. oh lordy!!! well, hop you have a nice weekend.

There is nothing to be scared of. She went through it, leave her a note if you do not want to break the ice verbally. Then if you still do not feel comfortable go to the school nurse or to someone that you know and trust so that they can guide you along that path.
