There is a vent pipe that goes through the roof from over every bathroom that leads from the sewer pipe so that gases don't build up in the bathroom area. If the pipe does not have some sort of mesh cover on the top of it at the roof you can get bugs, snails, frogs, snakes, etc. that come down the pipe and end up in the toilet. Hope a snail is all you get.

Did you eat escargo recently?
If you have a fishtank and did waterchanges, and put the dirty water down the toilet, you may have taken a snail with the water. How'd the snail get in the water? If you have live plants in that fishtank, it's easy for the snails in the tank witht he plants at the pet shop to get carried on a plant to a new tank.
None of these the case? I have no idea.

It probably crawled up your toilet drain from the sewer or it was in you house and made its way into the toilet. I could ask the same question about a cockroach.

It probably slithered up into someones clothes when they were outside and eventually fell into the toilet when they used it.
Either that....or someone needs to lay off the escargot.
