If your cable modem is really 7-8 years old and you cable ISP diagnosed it as a modem problem, just get a new modem. The one you have is very old technology - I am surprised it is still functioning.

Dan - Confirm your email with Yahoo! Answers if you are going to use the contact. In answer to your query:
"I am surprised your cable company doesn't or won't provide one. I use Time Warner Roadrunner, and Time Warner includes the modem as part of the service.
As far as basic modems go, I don't think you can do better than the Motorola SURFBoard ($80 at Best Buy) - it is what we used until we went to Digital Phone.

But call and talk to somebody at the technical department of your cable ISP, and make sure the modem is going to be compatible with your service. It should - most modems comply with DOCSIS, and most cable ISPs support that."

That sounds like the modem. If you know someone else who has the same services as you do, try swapping modems. Otherwise, go buy a new modem and try it (if you bought yours) -you can always take it back if that isn't the problem, or get a new one from the cable company (if that's how you got yours)

Before you go for a new modem - do you have a direct connection or wireless link?
I have 3 computers. The main computer is directly connected to cable. In an instant, I am there. Upstairs, the connection is described as "low." Not as good, but works.
This may sound silly, but, have you checked all connections to be sure they are tight? (Got bent out of shape the other day to find someone accidentally kicked the cord.)
There are times when connections differ. Early morning, late at night - usually good. Afternoons - bad. Weekends and holidays - horrendous. Think of it this way - it's like being in the shower when someone flushes the toilet. Connectivity depends on the number of users at any one given time.

Most cable modems have a "reset" button. Check yours to see if it does. If yes, then try this.
Shutdown your computer
Turnoff your modem & wait about 30 seconds
Turnon your modem & press the "reset" button
Let the modem resync with your ISP then turn your system back on.
Good Luck

I had issues with my cable modem at one point. It depends on how the cable is wired in your house. My comes in and splits off to two bedrooms and runs downstairs to the living room, where it splits again. When I had the cable modem downstairs, it didn't work well. I moved it upstairs, and it works fine. So, if you can put in closer to the place where it comes into the house, it works better.

I have the same issue with my Earthlink DSL Modem. The connection has been sporadic with frequent disconnects. I know that the issue is caused by the modem, so it is best to have your modem replaced!

that error usully mean you haven't been assigned a IP address by DHCP. I suggest unplugging the modem from the electricity and leave for about 30 seconds and then plug back in (with computer on all the time).. Hopefully that should fix the problem.
