Not necessarily. They are if its an established tank in which some algae exists so that they have something to eat. But if there is no algae, you have to actively feed them just like any other fish. Plus, "algae eaters" (a term that encompasses many different species) typically produce more waste than other fishes, which means more frequent water changes and more tank maintenance. I guess I'm leaning "no"

Generally not other than most types grow pretty big. It really depends on the tank. In a big tank with lots of algae, and left overs you may not need to do anything special. If you algae eater or pleco is actively swimming around when you feed you should likely throw in a sinking food like algae wafers every few days. Also a piece of cumber, or zucchini is a good treat now and then.

Algae eaters are great. Because I wasn't sure if he was eating enough algae, I would feed him frozen blood worms once a day (he loved them.) I had to give him away because we moved out of state and I couldn't transport him safely. I would only get one at first, just to see how big he gets.

As for the pooping and getting the tank dirty, if you have a good filter and change the pads as necessary, you only have to worry about the regular water changes. African dwarf frogs and other small fish are good companions for them (and the frogs eat frozen blood worms too.)

most alge eaters are pretty hardy little fish. Make sure that you place the alge eater in an established tank that has been setting up for about three weeks. If you are wanting to introduce one soon then I would suggest making sure that you get some alge tablets to help feed it.

Yes they are but you should put them in an established aquarium so there's algae for them to eat.
