You know when you are trying to be quiet and you "shhhhhhh" someone or when trying to get someone's attention without anyone else hearing you will say "pissssssssttt" but both sounds are very loud and can hear from a good distance - does that make any sense?

Good one! Maybe because of the higher pitch is easier to pick up rather than the volume of it. That's why factories and firestations have whistles (like the noon whistle). So the workers can hear it over all the other noise. Make sense?

weelllllllll if you said shhhh and no one heard you it would be pointless and the same goes if you wanted to get their attention with a pisssssssssssssttt However because you asked it on this web site there is a point to it all. By the way thank you for the 2 points

They aren't intended to be loud...

If "sshhhh" sounds loud try "Shut the #@%$ up" and see how people like it.

If "pssssst" sounds loud try "Hey, man yo!!" and see the difference.

Basically anything can be loud. But it's harder for it to be if, in the case of "sshhh", being loud would cause your saliva to fly out, or in the case of "pssst", being loud would cause your teeth to feel really ticklish

Nope... it doesn't. And when you make those noises, everyone in the room looks at you, so you have accomplished the getting the attention thingy.... cept you have everyone's attention and not just the one person you wanted.

I guess the sound of "rushing water" is supposed to sooth those around you so as not to bother them.
