Well, You could go one of two routes:
#1 If you want to get off the phone in a hurry and not waste time, just hang up. If it bothers you to just hang up without giving an excuse, tell them you just put the baby in the bathtub and you can't leave her unattended and then hang up.
#2 If you want to have fun with them...At the beginning of the phone conversation, they almost ask you, "How are you doing today." You could then say, "Oh, not so well. Right before the phone rang I was getting ready to slice my wrists (or swallow a bottle of pills, or wrap my lips around a revolver, pick your favorite suicide method and insert it here.) Start talking about your problems (whether real or fake) and don't let them get a word in...they'll either hang up...or you'll shock them and they will stay on the phone and not know what to say.

I don't know if you have a Do Not Call List there, but I got tried of the constant calls. It helped with new telemarketers, but the ones who had already had my phone number still call.
This is what I do, I do not answer out of area, blocked calls, and private calls. Doctor's offices sometimes call under the private call. If there is a number I don't know, I listen to the answering machine to see who it is. If they do not say who they are, I don't pick the phone up. I screen all my calls with the answering machine including when the bill collectors call.
Hope this helps, this works for me. I just erase their hang ups and their messages.

I use to moan into the phone, have my bird scream, talk in a foreign language. I then discovered the Do Not call list and have not received a telemarketer call since. If I do receive one I tell them that I'm on the list and they apologize and hang up

10 ways to terriorize a telemarketer.
When they ask "How are you today?", tell them ! "I'm so glad you asked because no one these days seems to care, and I have all these problems; my arthritis is acting up. my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died..."
If they say they're John Doe from XYZ Company, ask them to spell their name. Then ask them to spell th company name. Then ask them where it is located. Continue asking personal questions or questions about their company for as long as needed.
Cry out in surprise, "Judy! Is that you? Oh my God! Judy, how have you been?" Hopefully, this will give "Judy" a few brief moments of pause as she tries to figure out where she could know you from.
Tell the telemarketer you're on "house arrest" and ask if they could bring you some beer and corn chips.
After the telemarketer give their spiel, ask him or her to marry you. When they get all flustered, tell them that you could not just give your credit card number to a complete stranger.
Tell the telemarketer you are busy at the moment and ask them if they will give you their home phone number so you can call them back. When they say they can't give their home phone number, say "I guess you don't want to be bothered at home either, hang up the phone.
Insist that the caller is actually your friend Leon, playing a joke. "Come on Leon, cut it out." Seriously, Leon, how's your mom?"
Tell them to speak very s-l-o-w-l-y, because you want to write every word down.

How about just HANGING UP ON THEM?
I've never understood why people think that they have to be polite to telemarketers and talk to them. If you want, then you can say, "I don't talk to phone solicitors; take my number off of your call list," before hanging up on them. But never let them get a word in edgewise. And LEGALLY, they HAVE to stop calling you if you tell them to take you off of their call list.
Now, I didn't understand the last bit about collection agencies. If you're getting calls from collection agencies, then that's not the same thing as telemarketers. Collection agencies have a right to call you. If you're getting calls from collection agencies, then go to someplace that handles debts (such as Consumer Credit Counselling), make a payment plan, and let THEM handle those calls. You DO need to take care of your debts, though--one way or another.

I've found there is almost always a pause between my answering the phone and the telemarketer replying. If I hear nothing for 2 or 3 seconds after answering, I hang up. If that fails, I interupt the telemarketer by saying quickly, "I'm not interested," and hang up.

My favorite answer to this question is when the people trying to sell the lawn chemicals call. They go through the list of things that can harm your lawn and I will pick one. I say Yeah I want that problem how much does that one cost? And they say No I don''t want to sell you a problem I want to tell you how to get rid of it. And I say OOOHH you don't understand my lazy husband won't mow the yard so I would like to kill the grass so that we won't have anything to fight over any more. They hang up on ME!!!

Tell them these words exactly: "Put me on your do not call list" and then hang up. They are required by law to put you on a do not call list, at least in my state.

Start asking them personal questions. Get to know them... Spin it so they do not get the chance to ask you or present their info.
Good Luck

There is a do not call list they have to observe by law.
Ask them for their phone number and company number, call it and register for do not call - and they can never call you again.
Don't lower yourself to anything else.
