Do most in this situation swear off marriage again completely? A guy I know is going through this, dating a lot of women long distance as to not get close to them emotionally, etc.??

This is normal. "Once bitten twice shy." Eventually he will tire of the non-commitment rule. Give him a year or two and he will miss the closeness of a serious relationship. When he realizes this he will settle down.

common and expected. In a while, though, he will start to look for more emotional satisfaction. That mean more of a relationship. Playing the field is fun, but empty.

Common, and he should date different women. I doubt he will swear off marriage completely.

He has been tied to one person for 20 years and just want to play with freedom for a while.

This behavior is pretty common in this situation. As long as the woman understand that they are not the only one he is dating and he understands why he is doing what he is doing, I think that everything is fine.

that makes total sense. he is afraid of commitment. he is playing the field and keeping his distance. he may eventually get remarried but who knows?
