The chances are it is harmless. I have had four removed from my back. they were all harmless but get him to a doctor so he can have a look. Removal is done with a local and it takes all of 5 mins. totally painless. do not pull it off though because they tend to bleed a LOT.

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse. If he has had this all his life and it hasn't got any bigger, I wouldn't worry but birth marks do not come off. It could be a melanoma please get him to a Dr, if the root spreads to his lymph nodes he's in a lot of trouble. If he won't go tell him to contact me and I'll explain the situation to him

I just researched this and if the edge is like misshapen or the mole in general or if it starts to change colors and other stuff it can be melanoma which is the worst kind of skin cancer please go see your GP

do not pull it off - it could bleed loads and make it worse.
it should probably be checked by a medical professional. the earlier they see these things the better.
