this is a really smart question and one i think more people should be asking, obviously they have some agenda which is not widely known and i think its a little more complicated than 'wanting everyone dead'. The role of any terrorist group is to inspire terror in the population of a country so they will eventually overthrow the state. A misconception about terrorism is that they want to kill people, this is a pretty stupid way of thinking. Killing people is just a means to an end in creating terror. I think Al quaida in particular would gave more internation recognition and credit for their cause if they gave bomb warnings... (these still cause terror while minimising death)

If by terrorists, you mean the Muslim extremists who brought down the towers and so forth. Then the answer is, the public is fighting for their lives, singularly and collectively.

These people want a world where everyone practices a fundamental Muslim life style. In order to achieve that EVERYONE else must convert to Islam or die.

It sounds too simple but all you need do is look at the religious writings held sacred and focus on the passages they focus on. As you read, be aware, we, any non-Muslims, are the infidels.

you want a good answer..ok...these people want US and UK forces out of the Arabian Peninsula and Persia. This part of the world is the spiritual home of Islam, and thus is sacred to the fundamental spirit of islamic idealogy.

Al Qaeda and its members are not representative of Islam, which, in theory at least, is a a peacable religion with no interest in conflict. These people are marginalised by Islamby and their states and are looking to voice their opinions to peoples un-interested in their viewpoint, by using their violent tactics.

Interestingly, Saudi Arabia..the epicentre of Islam is a split state, is most of the reason why the trouble exists...

Saudis are state and religion combined...yet the oil rich sheiks have made trade and banking deals with the US..but the fundamentalists are opposed to this in principle and have become increasingly agitated as they see the infidel US as an encroachment to the purity of Islam.

So, with more and more reasons to be upset by the US presence, they have resorted to more and more unpleasant methods of voicing their minority opinion...they are not representative of Islam as a whole, and in fact, in many Islamic states, this kind of fundamentalist mentality is banned or repressed.

Whatever you think, muslims are peaceable people, please don't listen to bigoted opinions, you can judge for yourself if you visit a muslim nation where you will be treated well. I am not a muslim, nor am I religious, but I object to the way this scandal is being portrayed.

Inform yourself as widely as possible..and remember

terrorists are plonkers. they are a small section of society that have a belief system at odds with the majority of their fellow citizens. they feel that they are right and everyone else is wrong. the world would be a better place if only their way was implemented. so they get angry and resort to violence or some other type of abuse (!)to try and get their own way. i personally dont give a crap what they are fighting for - i would not be interested at all in anyone whose views are limited. It would be like trying to have a conversation about female masturbation with a small minded man. Pointless.

To drive America out of the middle east, and the Saudi royal family to stop pandering to the US, and oppressing its people. Also for Palestine to be recognised, and the destruction of Israel.

Some more extreme (american scare mongering?) views would have us believe they want to take over the world like Dr Evil, and turn everyone muslim.

Terrorists want the power given to them by the fear of others. They feel that if they hurt others in horrible ways, people will be afraid of them, won't attack them to defend themselves and therefore give them power. Terrorists are power-hungry, and won't stop after one bombing. They want to take over the world and rule it according to their wishes. They want people to worship them and they will destroy anyone who won't, for fear of being overthrown.
I am only logically stating this, but isn't that what the aim of Islam is? To devoid the world of all religions excepting Islam. The religion of Islam is so strong that they will kill anyone who doesn't conform to the strict rules, or tries to convert to another religion. I am so glad that I am a free Christian.

They want the West to stop meddling in mid-eastern affairs. We won't because we are addicted to oil. I wish we would get out of the middle east and become more self reliant the way the US should be, but people are too afraid to make that leap. If , and it is a hypothetical if, there was another Australia, we could ship them all off to it. They could all start a lovely new life there.
