Here is a description of bullet entry & exit regarding JFK:

1. The bullet enters the skull by forming a small entrance hole.
2. Some blood and brain matter is ejected backward out this small hole as backspatter.
3. The bullet, which may expand, fragment or tumble, then passes through the brain.
4. This bullet passage creates both a permanent cavity and a temporary expanding cavity.
5. The bullet leaves the skull by creating a larger irregularly shaped exit hole.
6. After the bullet has left the skull, blood and brain matter continues moving outward from the path of the bullet until the head bursts from the accumulated pressure, creating an even larger and more irregularly shaped exit wound.
7. Brain matter is ejected out all available openings as forward spatter, the largest of which is usually the expanded exit wound, with its final size depending on how large the internal pressures became.

The bullet enters by poking a small hole. Very little momentum transfers, so the head remains steady (despite what Oliver Stone had put in his movie). Once inside the body, however, a bullet starts to tumble as bullets are unstable. By spinning around, they start draggin a lot of what is insiade whith them. Then, the exit wound is produced, which is usually a lot larger than the entry, becasue the bullet is no longer point forward, and has deformed somewhat. As the bullet exits, it drags a lots of stuff out, and that jet is like propulsion, yanking the head FORWARD, towards the shooter.

Penn & Teller, the two funny and reliable magicians (really COOL guys) did the experiment in their book "How to play with your food", they had human head sized watermelon wrapped in fiberglass tape (to simulate the strength of the bone) and they shot at them with the same kind of rifle Lee Harvey Oswald used. In all cases, the melons fell forward, towards the gun, with small holes in the front, and big ones in the back.

So there goes any conspiracy theory. Except for those who don't believe in science.

Obviously, you are discussing the effect of bullets upon humans, so I'll mainly limit my answer to living animals. The skin is elastic, so the entrance hole is smaller than the diameter of the bullet. The exit hole will be a bit larger or much larger than the entrance hole, depending upon the type of bullet used, the caliber and where it passed through the body. The usual military bullet is hard by Geneva Conventions. It does minimal damage, but it can push some tissues ahead of it. If bones are hit, the effect can be enhanced. Hollowpoint and softpoint bullets expand if they are properly designed for the target. They can have a spectacular explosive effect. I used a 300 grain bullet in my .460 Magnum Weatherby elephant rifle to kill an old cow. It nearly blew her head off her body and totally emptied the skull. An elephant bullet wouldn't expand much on humans. I use different bullets for different sizes of game. With my .300 Magnum Sako rifle, I use heavier bullets with thicker jackets for moose than for whitetail deer. The biggest deer I've killed weighed over 300 lbs., but mooses may weigh 1800 lbs. Humans are similar in weight to deer, so I'd use the same bullets on either.

According to The Warren Report:

First bullet struct him in the back, failed to exit. JFK begins to slouch.

Second bullet struck him in the neck, exited through the throat, went through the forward passenger seat, struct Texas Governor John Connely, exited Governor Connely's chest, entered and exited the wrist, entered (and exited?, I don't recall) the thigh. This was The Magic Bullet.

Third bullet struck the back of the head, exited from the forehead, causing massive trauma and death. Explosive gasses caused the head to whip backward, giving some viewers the impression he had been struck from the front.

The effect of Bullet entry? It pierces the skin. Depending on what angle it did so you can determin the location of the shooter. In addition, If the bulet does not go all the way through you can tell how far away the shot was fired from by how deep it penetrated.

Bullet is small and perfectly round upon entry. Upon impact it begins to expand and fragment. resulting in mucho internal damage (especially with a head shot) Resulting in a large exit wound.
