Because those people take for granted the qualities of the person, and when that actual person dies, that's only then that those people realize; it takes death for them to realize their love for someone.

People are feeling bad enough as it is, with the loss of a person.
No one wants to hear that he was a wife beater, a child molester, an embezzler, a senile old coot who forgot to zip up his pants all the time.
It serves no honest purpose

Great question! I wonder why so many people say bad things about others, ie comparing, complaining and don't often think if the good things about others more often?
I think it's too late to say good things about them after their dead. They don't get to know other's appreciation.
This happened with my Grandfather. It helped me learn to appreciate others more.

It's purley out of respect but I find that quite annoying as lying about what you thought of someone is not respect.... I find it easier to say sorry for your loss and no more about the person, something you don't say can't be a lie.

it's according who died. sometimes when people who died have done bad things in his or her life, people will talk the truth event ought it's a bad things.
it' s just being polite, the people who live behind, like family, they don't want to hear about bad things that the person (who died).
you also don't want to hear bad thing's from another people about your family who died.
and also it will please the family that the person have a good live and have been good person when he or she alive.

You can't say never
Sometimes people are afraid of this person during his/her life and when he/she dies , they get their chance to talk!
But mostly , yeah , they try not to do so , they feel sorry for them because their life ended and may be they wanted to say sth to them before they die but they didn't get the chance

Its always best to remember them in a good way to make people cry for them more!
Its respect and people tend to ignore good things about people until after they are gone....

It is just some unspoken rule in our society. Supposedly, it is not "proper" to speak badly of the dead. I have lived long enough to see some real jerks die,.....and I never said anything nice,....I just opted to say NOTHING at all. Worked for me.

out of respect...one time I extended my sympathies to a couple of young sisters(in their 20's) who had just lost their mother and the sisters now had 12 people living together in a 2 bedroom house and a lot of little kids included...and they looked at me and said "we're not...she was mean"
