Think of a word as an image on a page. Fonts create a balance with a picture within a layout. They can describe moods and attitudes and can enhance the meaning of a word. They are very important in graphic design.

i am not sure what you are asking as far as lay out. Fonts are very important in graphic design. if you were to be creating a poster or flyer, the choice of what font the lettering is going to be is very important. And by fonts i mean the style of lettering. Whether it is Times New Roman or Arial or Comic Sans, each one has its own look and emphasizes what you are trying to say in a written peice.
And there are 1000's of types of fonts. There are a core of popular ones that are used. I find the best way for me to see the font I want is in the drop down menu in Microsoft Word. This way i can see what each font looks like.
As far as layout, i would say its how you arrange the items on your paper, canvas, screen, whatever. I beleive layout is a whole other topic which there are books written on it.

Dear friend, perhaps little odd way of answering your question. Please read the article at link given below. He is Steve Jobs, founder of Apple and Pixar. Benchmark for all the entrepreneurs…and yes, a calligrapher and typographer as well! Please read his remarks about a typography in his speech…perhaps you will get the answer?
