I'd stay away from sashes and ballet flats. You'll look like you are trying too hard.
Just wear what you normally would and are comfortable in. The best look for anyone at any age is what they are comfortable in. When you try styles that aren't "you" then it shows. The awkard, stiff, uncomfortable, or clumsy movements that come with clothing you aren't used to will make you stand out in a bad way, no matter how great you look standing still.
If you aren't sure about what's in style right now, just walk into your local stores. It's on the racks right in front of you.
Flared jeans and pants are going out of style this fall. If your closet is full of 17", 19", 21" flares, buy new. Wide and skinny are what's back in style.
Don't load up on skirts and dresses. You don't what to wear them that often.
Tank tops, camis, tube tops, and sleeveless may not be the smartest ideas. Not only are they against most school's dress codes, you'll probably be freezing while you sit in class.
Stay away from heels higher than 2". Your feet will be killing you at the end of the day. If you must get heels, look for ones with a wider heel.
Mostly, just buy what you like and what looks good on you. Looking nice as you will be far better than trying to be something that you aren't.

Hi. After reading the other answers, I have to say that stonewashed jeans are out and never ever wear denim from head to toe. Wear what you are comfortable in. A pair of jeans or capris with a cute babydoll top and some flipflops would be really cute and fashionable. If you don't want to wear a babydoll top, a polo shirt (like American Eagle) unbuttoned with a contrasting cami underneath looks cute too. Good luck and have fun this year!

remember to always be comfortable in your outfit but lets see hm........ jeans are always in but really common. if you have a great pair of unique jeans is great with a cute shirt. then you could wear a pair or fllipflops with jewels or something funky on them. for jewelry i just would go with whatever matches your outfit. personally i am a big fan of silver jewelry so that is what i am going to be wearing
