You might be overheating, download SpeedFan...it will tell you temps and fan speeds and power supply voltages (which might also be your problem).

I just had the same problem with an ATI Radeon 9550 AGP.
I had an emachines T3104 1 GB ram; add an additional fan; 300 watt power supply. I just wanted basic 3D for mostly work and not really for games. The card overheated my system causing shutdowns just doing idle stuff like web surf and screen saver. I removed the card and software and the problem went away.
ATI added so many software items like File Player, Remote and ALL in ONE Wonder that I wonder if it didn't slow my system. The cards performance didn't live up to it's advertisement. In fact my onboard video system outperformed the card especially in video playback. I updated Bios, DirectX and video drivers.
I did my research and was careful to match the system recommendations especially in regards to power supply wattage.
The weakest link it seems was the Sempron +3100.
This shouldn't matter if the minimum is a Pentium III.
I returned the card and now working on upgrading the chip,
power supply, and cooling system as well as building a true game system from the ground up.

I've noticed other people who were using Sempron and had this problem. Make sure that your RAM and video card are not faulty. And do try a temperature monitoring tool to check if overheating is the problem.
