I like an inexpensive product at the home depot called Zep Commercial Stainless Cleaner. It removes the spots, can clean off nearly anything and then puts a protectorant on the surface that resists the stains from setting again and makes it easier to clean, too.

water and Comet...or baking soda...or toothpaste (silica or baknig soda content)...600 grit sand paper...ultra fine steel wool...
This is primarily a mechincal cleaning. If you use chemicals, you will likely just get a bigger/new stain. All of the answers above depend upon a fine grit abrasive. If the grit is too large, you will mar the surface by leaving scratch marks. Try to follow the grain of the stainless steel ,if their is a grain.

What we used when cleaning houses with the stainless steel products was lemon oil they sell it at the stores . you wipe it on and then take a soft cotten like diaper or dish towel and wipe all the excess oil back off and it takes of any fingerprints , and everything else that was on it.. works really good and makes the stuff look brand new again..
hope it works for you.. brings life back to kitchen sinks.

Lowe's carries a 'stainless steel spray' after using it, I have
had no water spots at all.
It is a cleaner and coats the steel at the same time.
I use it monthly.
good luck
