Prudhoe Bay Oil production is shutting down for unspecified duration - cutting off 8% of our national supply and 50% of domestic production. No real intense coverage in the news media like one would anticipate happening. No huge spike in gas pump prices either! AND a station owner told my dad on Monday that prices were jumping from 3.15 to 3.79 on Tuesday which never happened - in fact we are now down to 2.95 in my town. And we've all seen the pump price jump all over the place in reaction to news events (and often seemingly nothing at all).

So - knowing how "in the pocket" of Big Oil our illustrious leader is....am I being totally paranoid suspecting that there is some kind of government influence, supression of info, coercion, etc. etc. at work in this situation?

You need to think not just globally, but 3 dimensionally. The closest market for Alaskan oil is just a short skip across the North Pacific to Japan and China. Hence 90 plus percent of Alaskan oil is shipped to Japan rather than the states. The place to look for spiked prices is in the Orient. The conspiracy of silence is pumping oil out of North Shores will not make us energy independent because it is way too dangerous and hence too costly to ship oil down the inside passage and along the rugged western coastlines. As Oregon and Washington state get most of their oil and natural gas from Canada, to benefit the US the Alaskan oil would have to travel all the way south to the LA basin.

When thinking oil think not just global markets, but distances across the globe. Hope this helps.

I have to say I am surprised that the gas hasn't jumped. I heard on the news last night that they stoped a terriost plot two days before it was going to happen. Their plan was to blow up 10 planes as they came into or landed in America. (Sucide bombers.) They claim gas isn't going up because of that. They claim less fuel is needed because flights were canceled and some people chose not to fly. Who really knows though.

Frankly I am getting sick and tired of reading in the newspaper that the oil componys have a record high of moneys made and yet they jump the prices on us. If they are making record high money I would like to know why can't they give us little people a break.

I do believe something suspicious is going on. Ofcourse it's a theory and even if I had proof it would do us no good.

For the record Prudhoe Bay is about 8% of US domestic production and it now appears that only half of the Prudhoe Bay Field will be shut down.

Yes, you are very paranoid. There was tremendous attention paid to the Alaska situation, it just got overshadowed by the terrorism story. The price of oil actually dropped $2/ barrel yesterday.

The problem is, it is all speculation. There is no proof of anything. So it is an interesting theory
