Defrag and reboot ~~~

Scan disk for errors (disc cleanup under system tools)
delete internet cookies
delete any programs you don't use (downloaded internet games....)
Run a virus software (www.lavasoftusa.com has a free program)

Then after you have done all this and anything else someone suggests

THEN you defrag the hard drive.

If it is still slow, more RAM might help, but if it is a slow processor....might be time for a new computer.

Oh, and to delete un necessary programs running in the background. CTRL-ALT-DLT brings up the task manager, on the second tab "Processes" sort the items by "User Name". Do NOT end process for anything that shows LOCAL SERVICE, SYSTEM, OR NETWORK SERVICE. Leave all those alone. Any thing that has your user name or says owner can be closed safely EXCEPT explorer.exe and you are using the taskmgr.exe so you shouldn't close that either. If you recognize your virus software you can leave that running, but most everything else isn't ALWAYS needed all the time. Turning off these programs will free up some of your RAM memory.

Try opening Internet Explorer. Then on the top of the window click on the tab that says Tools. Then click on Internet Options. On the window that comes up, click on Delete Cookies. This should help.

Defrag, if that doesn't help check for spyware. If nothing still, check the amount of free RAM you have through Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc then performance tab)...if it looks low, get more RAM.

use disk clean up to free up unnecessary space.
Also, delete extra files and data from temprary folders.

Also, it is suggested that you remove unnecessary and rarely needed s/ws from your computer.

One more important thing is you remove extra programs from startup, those programs load during boot up process.

The steps you will require to follow for performing above tasks depend on the OS you are using.
