ok. When multiplying exponents with the same base, always add the exponents together (ex. Y^8 * Y^3 = Y^11)
When dividing exponents with the same base, always subtract the eponents from eachother (ex. M^9/ M^6 = M^3)
Using this information, you can solve Y^3*Y^11/Y^8 in steps. Y^3*y^11= Y^14. Y^14/Y^8=Y^6.
Now for the why: If you write down Y^8 out on paper (that is, writing Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y) and then wrote Y^3 (Y*Y*Y) next to it, and then wrote * inbetween to signify multiplication, you would get Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y*Y, or Y^11 (this is just a visual to help you understand).
For dividing, if you write down M^9 (as in M*M*M.....) and then write M^6 underneath, then cross out all the common Ms and you are left with M^3.

Okay. You just need to know the rules of exponents. :-)
When multiplying two like bases that have exponents, like in your y^8(y^3), you ADD the exponents and keep the base.
So, in y^8(y^3), you would keep the y the same and add the exponents.
y^8 x y^3 = y^11
You know that multiplication and division are opposite functions, right? So, what's the opposite of addition? Right! Subtraction. So, when DIVIDING, you SUBTRACT exponents!
m^9 / m^6 = m^3
Now, you just have a mix of them together.
y^3 x y^11 / y^8
Okay, well it depends on how the equation was written. If it was written like this:
(y^3 x y^11) / y^8, then you multiply first, then divide. If it was written like this:
y^3 x (y^11 / y^8), in other words, the division was written as a fraction, then you divide first.
Let's do it both ways.
(y^3 x y^11) / y^8
y^14 / y^8
y^6
y^3 x (y^11 / y^8)
y^3 x y^3
y^6
Oh, lookie! You get the same answer either way. Anywho, sometimes it makes a difference, so watch for how the equation is written. If there's a fraction (division) written in, you have to do that part first!

y^8 * y^3 = y^(8 + 3) = y^11
m^9 / m^6 = m^(9 - 6) = m^3
