#2 is how hard the lead is
the hardness of pencil lead is on a number scale the higher the number the softer it is. #1 pencils are to hard and will not right dark enough for normal use. softer ones will run down quicker. someone decided that was the best one to use and stuck with it.
If you get a basic set of drawing pencils you will get 1-9. there are also some letters if you go off the ends of the number scale but i don't rember how they work. they are like H HB and B or some such junk.

Take a drafting class.
The pencils are graded by the softness or hardness of the graphite (lead)
A harder graphite will leave a sharper, smaller, lighter line.
A softer graphite will leave a bolder, larger, darker line.
A No. 2 pencil is a very good mid grade right down the middle kind of all purpose pencil.

Because the #1 pencil had all the answers in it. And is now stored in a secret warehouse outside Trenton New Jersey.

the #2 designates the hardness of the lead. A #1 pencil is harder (i meant harder), therefore the marks it would make are lighter, and you have to press the #1 pencil harder to make a dark line.

I'm not sure, I have never seen a #1 pencil.

We always talk about #1. Whose top 1, whose # 1.. we always look for the very best.. But isnt # 2 also the best?? Sometimes we always look on whose #1 and we forget about the others.. how about # 2? =)

because the shade of the pencil is mid-way between #1 and #3. #1 is darker, I believe.
Addendum: Nope, I was wrong, #3 makes darker marks.

because ,it maybe the most popular, but the average pencil that everyone uses is the HB , so that is why.
