first, make sure your browser security settings are at least 'med high'.
second, make sure your ISP pop-up blocker is on.
third, set your history retention to the minimum (one day)
then, from the properties section of the browser, delete all cookies, all temporary files, and all history, and reboot your machine.

1) If it's advertising, that is the way they keep their site "free" for you to use.
2) If it's "news" they have it to inform people about what's happening in the world
3) If it's "entertainment" it's because some people are actually interested in the stuff.

In other words, they're trying to cater to all tastes and make money at the same time. It's called capitalism.

I'm just surprised that it bothers you. Most people are able to selectively ignore what's on the home page of sites and simply go to where they want to be. As you get older and lazier, you'll learn to ignore a lot of things too. Just don't take everything so personally. They're not out to get you, they're merely trying to be all things to all people and make a profit at the same time.
