Sleep is as important for mind as for the body. while lying down out body gets the required rest but out brain does not.
because a large amount of information is continously poured into our brain through eyes. this information has to be processed by the brain. our brain stops processing the data coming from the eyes when our eyes are closed and starts processing as soon as it is open.... this is an involuntary action. hence our brain signals our eyelids to close when we sleep, so that it can relax too...
did any1 say about best answer?... 10 points????

It is a common misconception that we need to close our eyes to sleep. On contrary nobody completely close their eyes while sleeping. If we observe carefully in some subjects the eye will only be partially shut. This is because during sleep all the voluntary muscles of our body will be in a relaxed position, including the muscles of the eye lid 'levator palpebrae superioris' which is in a semi closed/closed position during rest. To go to sleep bright lights wont help ( due to neurological and endocrine reasons) and this is why we prefer to close the eyes voluntarily to initiate sleep.

Open status of eyes means:
feeding brain with external visual data,
Sleeping is the status of "Resting" means:
Stopping visual data feeding through eyes to the brain,
even though when it's dark, we r feeding the dark information to the eyes.

It protects your eyes from drying out. I guess you could blink all night, but then your eyes would never get any rest. Also, a lot of people sleep with their eyes just slightly open - looks kinda creepy.

the dark room is not perfectly dark.
plus, it protects your eyes from dust etc whilst you sleep
plus, your brain is very active during sleep and doesn't need to be interpreting stuff your eyes are sending it (although dolphins, when sleeping, swim in a circle with their outside eye open to check for danger.... after a bit they change direction and change eyes...)

some people do..
Well, it's for your eyes protection. While awake u r seeing and can protect your eyes by reflex in case of an attack on you eye (by dust, insect etc..), but when asleep u don't see anything, your reflexes don't work, therefore if they are open it can be damaged by any external factor... so you close it, this way it remains protected by your eye lids

To keep your eyes moist while you sleep...without that your eyes would dry...you blink while you are awake to keep the surface of the eyeball wet and clear the surface of dirt and dust so that it can function correctly...
