You forgot to mention all the drug scandals. Just thought I would add that in. I dont know, sort of, yes, but I think currently there are still enough athletes who make it there, only to lose out in one of the first qualifyers or something, and they do it just because they love it. As long as they are filled with people who love to play, and come to play, and dont come to win gold medals, than it will be fine. Currently, I think its fine...but its definitely breaking away.

I've always liked the idea of the olympics. Everyone, whether they're at war or not, drops everything and comes to compete as one (excepting for such situations as the munich olympics in 1972). However, as was said above, drug scandals have come into play, and now the theme is winning at all costs, even if that cost is cheating, and that is thoroughly wrong. However, I think the Olympics do plenty of good by keeping peace for at least a few weeks every 2 years and fostering national pride for all nations.

The focus on winning at all costs is what does more harm than good. If you observes the Olympic creed and athletes and nations were to abide by these ideals, then it would be a truly great event. Alas, that's not the world we're living in.
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."
When money is involved, it perverts morals and ethics. So, it's not the olympics that are bad, rather they expose human nature, greed, avarice, jealousy, pride, etc....

Things have changed as this question would not of been asked 20 years ago. We need to get back to that time around the 1984 Olympics.
