casey_leftwich is, of course, incorrect. Americans are not free, and I have never felt that way. We do need government permission to travel, either with a drivers license or passport. I do not like the situation our elected officials (I did not vote for them) have put us in. Based on lies and deception. When you try to say it is wrong, you are called unamerican and not patriotic. Freedom of speech? Not when others that do not agree with you attack, verbally or physically. This country is deeply divided right now, and the government does not care.

Because they are Conceited, Arrogant and Imperialistic!

Americans who think they are free do so because it is a patriotic value which is messed up, they devalue the rest of the world because it is not as rich as them and look down there noses at us Europeans because they are more powerful and wealthier.

They are driven by the means of money, they have very little to offer the world unless its a case of "sending in the troops!"

They say they police the world and are sick of it and that us Europeans should bow down and be grateful for it because they have got it all and are doing us a favour, yet it is not us Europeans oppressing another Nation and stealing its wealth...

What Americans fail to understand is they are descendants of us Europeans and that it was us who colonised there Nation giving them the so called Great Country they have today!

The problem with the USA is that it will always believe it never needed us or ever will..that is a mistake in the future that unfortunately they will eventually regret!

As all Great Empires come to a timely end...America is the new Rome and Bush its Cesar..

Why not say freedom of speech? Do you think the people of North Korea are free? Do you think the people of Rwanda are free? Come on. Think.

Americans respect the idea that we are 'free' because the majority of us came this way through generation of families who escaped oppression and poverty in other countries. As a country we have made terrible, terrible mistakes (slavery, displacing American Indians, oppressing women, child labor, Vietnam, Iraq). But as a people who respect the notion that we are free, we elect new government officials every 2-4 years and will change up if we think the policies and behaviour of our government are lacking. Americans, as a united people, believe we have the right to be free... and trust me when I say that we will not hesitate to protect our freedom in the United States. Of course, we respect and support all countries that provide their people with the freedom to pursue their lives productively and peacefully. And we are saddened by governments who threaten their citizens basic freedoms. Someday we'll 'get it' and leave the world to its own ways. Then when countries come calling for our help, as they've done so many times in the past, we won't come running. Maybe then the world will respect us again?

I am free because I think so.
In America we also have freedom from religion.
We have more freedom to dress the way we wish.
We have the freedom to pursue opportunity.
If we are not the greatest nation in the world why do people keep dying trying to get here? - so they can pursue "the American Dream".
And yes we do have freedom of speech.
They don't kill you or put you in jail in the US for disagreeing with the state religion like in Muslim countries or the govenrment like China or North Korea..

The fact is we're not free...it's all an illusion that most of us Americans have foolishly bought into, thanks to government propaganda and a deceitful 'free' press.
If we were "free', there would be no income tax. If we were "free" there would be no restrictions on where, when and why we could peacefully assemble. If we were "free" we would not be presumed guilty until proven innocent. George Bush and his paranoia has turned America into a police state.
You're correct: America has the most evil, corrupt, incompetent government in the civilized world. But because we're a "super power", we're able to bully everyone else into submission.
And then we wonder why "terrorists" attack us!
Americans represent 5% of the world's population, yet we squander over 55% of the world's resources.
And then we wonder why "terrorists" attack us!
The U.S. Government illegally and unconstitutionally invades another sovereign nation under the guise of bringing democracy to the nation. The real reasons we invaded Iraq was because George Bush had a personal vendetta against Hussein, and because Dick Cheney wants all the OIL swimming underneath Iraq's sands so he and his Exxon-Mobil buddies can get richer and richer and richer. Why can't we just be honest about it and tell the world we don't understand what 'our' oil is doing under Iraq's sand?
And then we wonder why "terrorists" attack us!
We are a greedy, gluttonous, arrogant people who have lived in wealth and enjoyed global power for far too long. Had we been willing to share that wealth, and use that power to the good of all nations instead of for our own self interests, perhaps the world would be a little more grateful. But, we've behaved like the rich old grandfather who doles out money to his grandchildren under certain conditions that they love and honor him. Otherwise, if they don't conduct themselves 'appropriately', they get cut out of the old man's largess.
And we wonder why "terrorists" attack us!
We believe ourselves to be sooo intelligent, and yet we might very well be the least educated people in the civilized world. If we travel abroad, we expect everyone else to speak English for our convenience. Yet we expect our legal and illegal immigrants to learn our language. We are perhaps the only civilized nation in the free world that does not expect our children to learn two or three languages before they're out of elementary school.
And yet we wonder why "terrorists' attack us!
We selfishly waste natural resources and energy. We neglect the environment and joke about the effects of global warming. We refuse to sign a treaty that might impair our "right" to keep on ruining the ecology in the name of excessive profits for our voracious corporate appetites who pay chief executives 500 times more than the average employee, enriching stockholders
while keeping 'average' consumers deeply in debt. We even refuse to REturn, REuse, and REcycle. We don't even try to understand the delicate ecological balance necessary between man, plants and all other animals, much less do anything about it. And those who complain about America's wastefulness or greed are told, "If you don't like it, leave the country!" We won't even share our wealth with our fellow countrymen, much less share it with the rest of the world!
And yet we wonder why "terrorists" attack us!
We Americans are NOT "free' - we are slaves to our own hubris and avarice. Our political system is the most corrupt in the entire civilized world, and our ignorance allows politicians to continue to suck off the taxpayers' teat without any regard for the future of our own society, or the world's. -RKO-

We think we are free, because in comparison to other nations (which opress their subjects ruthlessly), we ARE. It's as simple as that. People in England are also a free peoples... when compared to people from Cuba, Iran, etc. We have freedom to chose what religion to practice, what to think, say, write... we can even bear arms.

Now... the way the U.S treats other nations is a DIFFERENT story. I understand that the U.S is oppressive to others (and don't think the U.K isn't)... the U.S and the U.K are the worlds biggest bullies.

And I agree with Rain princess too. Yes, we have massive military strength... but wasn't this the might that also saved your asses in WWII? Think about it.

The way things are going, however... things might change. Our freedoms are diminishing more and more constantly in the name of security (reminds me a lot of the film "V for Vendetta").

Because we are bombarded with this message by the mass media. Also we are taught it from the ripe old age of 5 or 6 in our school system as well. Basically the powers-that-be have programmed this idea into our heads so that we think that we are the greatest country on earth, can do no wrong, and will not challenge the government in what it does. Keep the masses ignorant and happy and those in power can continue to do as they please.

We do have freedoms that we take for granted-- freedom of speech, religion, freedom to vote, freedom against unlawful searches, against cruel and unusual punishment, and search and seizure. When our country was founded these were truly radical ideas (that were applied to the white men that owned land-- but over time expanded to cover every citizen). Unfortunately these are being eroded in the name of "security."

Some Americans think they are free because of what they were taught in school....Some Americans do more research and find out that we are not free but for those that don't know whats really going on think we are free....And for that freedom of speech thing go's...nothing in America is free......as soon as you make a comment or remark and offend some one you are getting sued/ and going to court......... We know we really don't have the freedom of speech but maybe the illusion that we are given is enough for some.

we're a lot more free then the rest of the world...we dont have a limit to how many children we can have, we dont have to dress a certain way or walk ten paces behind our husbands, we can say we hate the president and not get killed for it...no one is ever truly free, but we have more going for us then a lot

and this question makes you sound no better then the americans who think we're all that exists...you really dont like us for saving your asses from terrorists?

Because I can do and say as I plesae. I can go anywhere at any time and not have to have my government's permission. I worship who or what I want when I want. My country stands up for itself, kicks a lot of ***, and takes $h1t from no one. We were founded on individual freedom and will remain that way.
