I think this is a wonderful question, although hard to pick 5!
1. "Reason for Hope" Jane Goodall
2. "A Wizard of Earthsea" - Ursula Le Guin
3. "The Awakening" - Kate Chopin
4. "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" Mary Wollstonecraft
5. "Harry Potter" - J.K. Rowling (because it's the book that first brought my attention to the crime of censorship and the damage it does to a child's imagination.)
And, I wanted to make a comment about what someone said about all of us who are sad and have no self confidence because we allow books to change our lives- Our lives are shaped by everything around us. It's when we allow things in to alter our perceptions of the world and shape our belief systems and passions that we gain that vital self confidence and understanding. The only sad thing is that people close themselves off to the beauty that literature and other things can bring us.
