Whenever I see a question about breastfeeding in public there are several answers that state something like "You don't urinate in front of strangers so why would you breastfeed?". Do people really think that we're feeding our children excrement? Would these same people like to eat a meal with a blanket over their face, or better yet, in the bathroom?

Because you are excreting the milk from an area that most people object to seeing in public. They seem to forget that this area would be covered modestly in public except when the baby needs nourishment and then you wouldn't see anything. Most moms are very capable of covering themselves and the baby during nursing. You would have to be sitting on top of them to know that they are nursing. As to the question of would they like to eat under a blanket or a bathroom - no they wouldn't but they seem to think that a baby should. It is called closed mindedness. Nothing you can do about it. But in more states it is allowed to feed the baby in public, and that is a good thing. Ohio just approved it in 2005.

well technically it *sort* of is an excretory function of the woman's body... but the act itself is NOT the equivlent of an excretory function. I think the problem is with those people who equate breasts and breast feeding with sexual activity- stupid, adolescent, socially-retarded people who think that the only function of the breast is to provide sexual pleasure. It is a product of our American pop-culture, I'm afraid.
