The Porsche is faster and more expensive of course.
A comparison of the 911 to the M Roadster (BMW Z4 style but with an M motor and M suspension) would be a more realistic. I would have trouble deciding between the two.

Advantages: The Z4 is distinctively styled and offers the kind of rewarding drive and quality construction that I have come to expect from BMW. It features an electric roof as standard. The BMW Z4 was one of the best roadsters of the year 2004(according to a magazine). Hot, hot, hot!!!
Disadvantages: Those unique looks won't appeal to everyone(excluding me!). Big engines and high prices exclude some owners of the old Z3.
My Verdict: I own a Z4, great fun to drive and a serious threat to Porsche.

The Porsche is the best true sports car period. The Z4 is a toy and is not as usable. I had one for 8 months and just couldn't take it anymore. If you don't want to spend the money for the Porsche, the Audi TT is a far better car than the Z4. It's not as sporty as the Z4 but it's better balanced for the average convertible buyer who wants two seats and a beautiful design.
