Using his extensive knowledge of construction techniques (he has a degree in civil engineering), he built “training camps”, some dug deep into the sides of mountains, and built roads to reach them.

These camps, now dubbed “terrorist universities” by Washington, were built in collaboration with the ISI and the CIA. The Afghan contra fighters, including the tens of thousands of mercenaries recruited and paid for by bin Laden, were armed by the CIA. Pakistan, the US and Britain provided military trainers.

The obvious answer is us. Would you rather that the Soviets spread into the Middle East via Afghanistan. Just waiting to dominate more of the wold's oil and becoming more powerful. The cold war would still be here and the Berlin wall would still be intact. Obviously we also armed Saddam but the threat of Iran conquering him would be a far worse terror threat to us today. Stop thinking in the present and think of your children and grandchildren future. Or maybe you just hate anything this president does even if it falls within a liberals ideal as what's good. It seems as if GWB pursued a Liberal agenda and claimed he was a conservative the bashing of the left would still demonize everything about him. Meanwhile progress is stifled both here and abroad due to the unquenchable thirst the left has to gain more power and control of money and the expense of this is more Americans die both here and abroad. Shame on you, Dean, Palosi, and Kerry.

It was originally a Nabisco cracker called Alkeeda Biscuit which they stopped making in 1967.

However, a warehouse full of old Alkeeda Biscuits was shipped to the Middle East and resold in bazaars and fairs. The crackers had gottten damp on the long ocean voyage and a type of fungus known as ergot had formed on them.

This ergot fungus did not affect the taste of the crackers, however it did give them hallucinogenic properties.

Many Arabs who ate the Alkeeda crackers had visions and psychotic episodes in which they believed that Satan had taken over all the world except for their own land. In the vision Allah told them to go forth and destroy the Great Satan.

Of course, the Arabic spelling of Alkeeda is Al-Qaeda (or Al Quaeda according to this questioner)

Al Qaeda, an Arabic & Islamic resistence movement, created by individuals to fight colonial powers who invaded and occupied Arab and Muslim land. The often weak, corrupt and and collaborative governments, who did not fight back the invaders, created an atomeshpere for inviduals to take the resistence into their hands. In 1979, the USSR invaded Afganistan to create a puppet regieme on its southern borders. The USA fought back and presuaded Arab and Muslim Govts (Saudi & pakistan) to help by sending volunteers from Arab & Islamic countries to fight the communists in Afganistan. The story is too long, but the experience of war the fighters gained used it agains other colonial powers and Al Qaeda was born
