Do your preventative maintenance when scheduled.
keep a good check on all your fluids regularly.
( at least once a week.)
Most important, that most people don't do. When you first crank your car up after it's been sitting over night or for long periods of time, let it run for a few minutes before taking off.
It take a small amount of time for the systems to fully lubricate, and when you just crank up and drive off, you cause alot of unnecessary wear on your transmission and engine.

The first and main thing to keep an eye on is your oil. Have your oil changed regularly. Read your owners manual for the recommended mileage at which this should be done. Most say every 3000 miles, but newer cars can go longer. Watch your tires. Check periodically for signs of under inflation which can decrease your gas mileage. Basically, read your owners manual...there should be a list of what needs to be checked and when. They built the car, they know what needs doing when. =)
