The Red Sox are now dealing with the same problems the Yankees did earlier in the year. They are hurt. The Yankees are getting everyone back. The Red Sox don't have enough time to regroup. Whether they make the playoffs is really up to how the White Sox play. Right now neither looks like they want it enough.

They are in one heck of a slump this year, but they don't always stink in August. During their 2004 run, the team went 42-18 to end the season, which included a 21-7 record in August (and seven in a row to end the month).
Be patient, every team slumps, they're without their number 3 pitcher and their captain in addition to plenty of other injuries. And they might miss the playoffs this season but they'll be a contender for years to come. This team has a fantastic long-term vision.

It's just the way they have always been , get us all excited for most of the season , keep us on the edge of our seats and usually let us down.

I said this early on, the Red Sox will not make the playoffs. They have too many injuries to key people now.

I don't have a legitimate answer for previous years, but this year I think they are struggling because of managements lack of addressing their starting pitching needs. After Schilling and Beckett what do you have left? David Wells? To think that someone who hit his peak YEARS ago would help is delusional. Lester? Get real, an unproven youngster. Wakefield? Better hope he's healthy and that his knuckleball is dead on. Theo put too much faith in his arms, and they'll be lucky to make the playoffs because of it.
