the pattern I am looking for was printed, I think, in the woman's day either 1979/1980. It was a ladies jacket that had a rather large shawl collar knitted in and you turned the side edges back at the front to form the pockets, lapels and also became the collar

Go to Google and do a search. Womens Day 1979 issue - or you can try variations. The Research Library in your area may have data for these old publications.

You could try contacting Woman's Day Magazine through email at their website.

Here are several links to check free patterns. There is something like what you are describing at the Lion Brand website but it's Crocheted. You can check their knitting section to see if something there might work.

Check knittingpatterncentral.com. They probably won't have the exact pattern, but they've got enough that it shouldn't be too difficult to find something similar enough to be adapted.
