Once upon a time, i was married to an Egyptian. He was very offended when people would say he is an Arab. He was trying to prove he is not an Arab coz Egypt is in Africa. Have fun and good luck! Send us pictures.

The standard greeting is Asalaam Alakum! (Peace be with you). Unless you want to learn a lot of arabic, it's generally best to avoid it - just smile a lot and speak slowly. Because arabic works differently to English, you can be misunderstood. Also, if you address a Copt in arabic, he'll feel insulted.

After 10 minutes of landing in Luxor you will be screaming get the f*ck out of my face as hoards of touts descend to convince you that their felucca/caleche/taxi/bag of nuts/any old tat is the one to buy.

Good luck a large sense of humour is required.
