Depends on what you mean by "cheap." I have cats and birds. My Electrolux finally died so I bought a Riccar. Think I paid about $300. This machine beats anything I have ever owned. Bolt down the furniture and tie up the kids, because this vacuum really sucks! The wand can be extended so that even tall people don't have to bend when vacuuming.

BTW, you get what you pay for. The last place I worked kept buying $80 machines from W-M. They'd last just long enough to outlive the warranty.

I have a Sharp that has been very effective with golden retrievers. Stay away from the bagless vacs with pet hair.

Any cheap vacuum will do - the trick is to do it often and have the brush down. I use a cheap model and use lots of elbow grease!
