I'm talking about the script. Man our teacher is a monster, and he keeps on rejecting our proposals. Does anybody know any good title for a college production play (and no, we can't write our own script, it has to be from some acclaimed writer or something)? The important thing is that the play has to be developmental, and that it has to depict a social issue (poverty, divorce, etc.) Please help. Titles are appreciated, but websites and direct links will be honored.

O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms could be the play you are looking for: the desire to posses, the struggle to obtain (land) destroys the family + the love triangle of father, son and the new stepmother reminds of the tragedy of Phaedra.

Irish plays could also provide good material to work with. Sean O' Casey's Red Roses for Me or Juno and the Paycock present family family life and relationships his crises (husband-wife, mother-son, lovers, friends) with a quite strong political background.

If you want something contemporary (still Irish), i suggest Translations or Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel. The first is the impact of British colonization on a small-community, but language and identity are also the main themes of the play; the second is about poverty, religion, myth...

And I really hope that you'll be able to tame the "monster" :)

Ugh -- college productions tend to be dreary things, good experiences for the director or actor -- horrible for the audience.

I've had it with Chekov, Waiting for Godot and The Frogs. I say, "never again!"

If I had any influence I'd like to see Equus for example or even some experimental work like the stuff Richard Foreman does. Actors love Sam Shepard's stuff. The recent play about the boy in North Dakota (Utah?) who got beaten to death for being homosexual would be ideal for a college setting, huge cast and topical.

Enjoy the process!
