Why when I'm in the fast lane, leaving a safe distance between myself and the car in front, do idiots still drive up behind me flashing their lights wanting me to let them past. Because I wasn't driving any slower than the flow of traffic in the fast lane, all the idiot behind me gains is about 30 metres, and the chance to pester the driver who was in front of me (and I then get the chance to pester him/her from behind!).

Anyone else have this experience?

I have it quite a lot, stribg of cars in front of me, I am overtaking solid trafiic in the middle lane and jack the lad flashes his lights behind me, I ignore him.

Its also a growing practice that if you are in the middle lane and indicate to overtake, someone way back flashes their lights as if to give you permission!!

and you still get the people who own the middle lane even when there is no one in sight in lane 1.

Well, there's two sides to this and they both reflect what's wrong with society today.

On one hand I get mega annoyed wih people that cruise in the fast lane - the outside lane was designed purely for overtaking, after which you should pull in to the middle lane or, better still, the inside lane. Basically, everyone should travel in the inside lane at all times, only pulling into the middle lane to overtake and only in the fast lane to overtake those in the middle lane (i.e. when there's a lot of slow moving lorries or crawling up a hill). If everyone stuck to those rules - which were the rules first laid down for driving when cars were invented and which everyone has since decided to ignore or be totally unaware of - then the roads would be a lot safer. In addition we wouldn't have to slow down unneccessarily, traffic would be more predicatable and everyone would be happier, getting from a to b much more efficiently.

Anyway, my second point is that the respect has disappeared from driving, no-one cares about anyone else any more and most drivers seem so fool-hardy and flippant about driving what is the most effective killing machine known to man. I agree that everyone should back off to a decent distance and stop putting other's lives at risk. Having been in several accidents I know the damage that can be caused and arriving 2 minutes earlier isn't worth the risk to someone's life. That's someone's son, daughter, wife, husband, mother, father. I wish these lunatics would think of that when they're flashing from behind.

So, I think it's wrong to get annoyed with people in the fast lane if they're driving properly there and not holding the traffic up unneccessarily. I also think it's wrong to drive badly and hold others up in the fast lane when there's no need. Everyone needs to be more considerate!

Preaching over - wow, where did that come from???!!!

wow , nice other answers, you guys really thought about those

have you ever thought why hes flashing his lights?
ok chances r its just some nob, i agree
but, what if its an off duty policeman, whos wifes having a baby in the car?
what if the person behind, is listening to someone torture his wife at the other end of the phone.
what if their house is on fire..
wat if wat if.....

Do you really need to be in the fast lane.. is it really that terrible to get out of the way

and if all the ppl like you did get out of they way, would the roads move faster.. they just might

Note, drove an ambulance for 2 years. Havent driven in 1 year, i cant stand driving with all you other people on the road anymore, its all me this me that, not, oh why dont i let them, or maybe they are in a hurry....

If you were here in Germany, mny answer would be "Must have been a Mercedes, BMW or Audi driver. They are really trying to crack down on that over here in Germany. There are heavy fines for rushing one off the passing line through tailgating or flashing lights. But it still happens to me everytime I get on the Autobahn.
I usually get off the gas just a little to slow down by about 5km/m (3mph) and stop looking in the rear view mirror. Eventually I get over to let them pass.

Oh yes, had one last night (apart from no flashing). Any closer and i would have been his bonnet mascot! I usually stick to my guns and my other half makes gestures to say the other car is too close. Other things to do gently press your brake pedal enough to make the lights come on or put your foglight on and off to look like braking (if you can do that without turning on your lights, I can't!).

Just stay there, wind down your window and gesture with your hand out the window as if you are waving them to go past in an imaginary 4th lane or just spray wind screen wash onto your wind screen and hopefully on to threes. I do both and it works a treat

Yes he's being a tit but I'll be honest thats his problem.

If I see a vehicle which clearly wants to go faster than me I pull over and let him pass. It's not hurting me is it? My ego is small enough not to be bothered by it.

It's up to all road users to work together as ultimately we are all in the same position one day or the other.

yeah, experience that quite often.... I don't suggest ignoring them or tapping the brakes though like others on here have suggested... the driver gets upset then because they don't get their "way" and you end up with road rage.... (geez people on the road just need to mellow) I just gently signal & move out of their way and hope they don't crash into me or anyone else near by, resulting in me having to stop as a witness to their stupidity.

Right or wrong if they were behind me they would get a excelent chance to test their braking ability. I first only flash lights back at them (brake lights since they can't see my headlights) Then test their reactions to the real thing.

the other day, a BMW X5 was right up behind me on the A34. he kept trying to pass, i wasn't driving slow. i found a safe time to pull into the other lane and let him pass, i then pulled out behind him to continue overtaking. he slowed down and put his washers on to cover me. thing is, as it was an X5 it went right over me and onto the soft top 6 series who had just raced up behind me!! result!!
