For windows XP, press ctrl and alt and delete, then choose Shut Down

This sometimes happens to our computer also. The best advice I can give is just holding down the power button (on the pc) until it turns off. Then after 20 seconds turn back on again. It wont do any damage to the computer, so it's completely safe.

If the window does not close on clicking the close button,
press control, Alt and delete and then click on End Task.

I get the same problem now and then, just turn it off at the mains. restart the computer then try shutting down, should be ok after that. Works for me.

hold the power button on the machine for about 5-10 seconds... or unplug, wait for 15 seconds and plug back in.

Unplug it from a main socket and leave it unplugged 5 minutes. When you plug it back in, and boot up your computer Windows should start booting itself. Then do "scandsk" to scan your hard drive for a possible damages.
